This book forms part of an information project sponsored by the LINK Centre for Deafened People and the NADP (National Association of Deafened People). It describes the experience of nine people who became profoundly deaf when they were already in employment. It shows how they adjusted to their sudden or gradual loss of hearing and overcame the communication problems posed by their deafness to keep their jobs, find new jobs or set up their own businesses. Suggestions are drawn from the case studies to help other deafened workers who face similar problems in trying to keep their jobs or start new careers, and the operation of Access to Work and the employment provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act are explained. The book ends with a directory of a wide range of organisations and professions which can offer further help.
