This latterday "Candide", the story of an innocent at large in a corrupt world, is set in postwar Sicily where the Church and the Communist Party are fighting over men's souls in general, and that of Candido Manufo in particular. It combines Voltaire's light touch with Sciascia's darkly ironic wit.
