[Abstract] This study utilized the heuristic model of qualitative research to explore the question, "What is the experience of accessing one's creativity following inhibition?" The six phases of the heuristic model were used to complete this study and include initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication and a creative synthesis. In conjunction with these phases, the heuristic concepts of self-dialogue, tacit knowing, intuition, indwelling, and focusing were utilized. The heuristic model was chosen due to its emphasis on engagement on the part ofthe primary researcher, and my personal interest in working with this question. An in-depth review of the literature revealed that no similar or identical studies had been done on this phenomenon. Data was gathered from in-depth interviews with six co-researchers. This data was then organized using the heuristic formula. Analysis ofthe data revealed nine themes: (1) Inhibition as a result of self-doubt and critique as seen in the form of inner questioning; (2) Inhibition as part of a cyclical process; (3) A sense ofliberation from; (4) A sense ofletting go of; (5) An overall sense of wellbeing and excitement; (6) Creativity and its connection with self and identity; (7) Flow, encounter and ipteraction; (8) Social influences both positive and negative and; (9) A desire to pass on knowledge. The findings of this study have significant implications in the clinical, educational, and social settings.
