Mary Arnold's entire life has been filled with pain, abandoned on the steps of a church by her parents, not wanted by society and left within the care of government run orphanage. At nineteen she does nothing more than sleep, eat and work two jobs, just to pay for her way in life. But all of that changed on one cold morning as she walked home from her job as a night fill at the local convenience store. She wakes days later to find that she is in hospital in a room that is stark and cold, void of any flowers or gifts from loved ones. It is a tragic reminder of her lonely life and she wishes for something more, a life filled with love and happiness. Mary has little recollection of the events that led to her ending up in hospital. Now she is protected by a department of the police that she has never heard of and if that wasn't troubling enough, the detective handling her case walks into her hospital room and tells her that her attacker wasn't human. What could she say to him when he tells her that she is going into protection and the circumstances are the strangest she has ever encountered? The detective wants her to go into the protection of one supposedly mythical creature to survive a secondary attack from another not so mythical creature. Mary has little choice, if she wants to live she has to do what the detective tells her. She has to walk into the protection of a scary man in a creepy house until the police find her attacker. Behind the locked doors and the forbidden areas of the house, Mary settles into an uncomfortable existence. Her host William Lancaster is a dark and cold man, living with the despair of lost love. The arrival of Mary into his house awakens the memories of his past and the pain of losing his beloved wife. Mary's survival depends on William dispelling his morose thoughts and hatred of the world. Can she depend on a man that is so absorbed in his own misery that he cannot see the danger that looms or will she end up as another statistic of the secret police department? Walking down an alley at five am in the morning hadn't been the brightest thing that Mary has ever done, but in one brief moment she altered her world forever.
