In 1982 thirty-five young men became Antarctic expeditioners. Based at the Australian Casey Station, south of the 60th parallel, they completed a large scientific programme and continued the rebuilding of the new station at Casey. In an age before the internet and widespread satellite communications they were isolated from close friends and family and from society as a whole for a year. Antarctic is a place where most things you previously accepted as common became uncommon and the abnormal became the normal. It is a place of unlimited beauty, captured in many of the book's photographs, but it's also a place of hidden hazards to the body and a place where comradeship formed effortlessly. It was also a place where value was not expressed in money but in necessities and where a can of beer was worth its weight in gold. This is a story of adventure, exploration and friendships made for life.
